The US President, your Congressmen, your Pentagon brass can't come forth and tell the American people, "Look, we need to send our youth, our brave service men and women overseas, in the wilds of Central Asia, to prevent a nuclear holocaust between Russia and Pakistan... Err... one more thing: we also need to send hundreds of thousands of GIs and Marines in Iraq --to prevent Israel from nuking the country and snafuing the whole region (and beyond)." I guess the US's isolationist opinion couldn't withstand such plain truths... Hence your executive leadership comes up with yarns, with stories featuring American goodies vs Al-Qaeda baddies... The trick, of course, is to fast-talk, to bamboozle US opinion into hunting down Bin Laden and his ugly Taliban... The trick is to deflect local hatreds and animosities away from the real bullies --Russia in Afghanistan, and Israel in the Mideast-- and funnel them towards America, thereby changing the nature of the conflict. So, in the case of Afghanistan, what was initially a resistance struggle by the Pashtun majority against the Russian occupier/oppressor becomes a US-led mopping-up of a lawless country crawling with terrorists.... Likewise, in the case of Iraq, what was historically an attrition war against Israel by her anti-Zionist neighbors (Iraq, Syria, Iran,...) becomes a US-led crusade to save the world from Saddam's WMDs.... And in both cases, the US willingly, recklessly entangles itself in "local crises" without ever telling the American people the REAL ins and outs of what's going on.... Note: samvak.tripod.com
