USDA won't allow independent testing for mad cow

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government rejected a request by Creekstone Farms Premium Beef to allow the beef company to test all of its cattle for mad cow disease, the Agriculture Department said Friday.

USDA Undersecretary Bill Hawks said Creekstone's request for a license to test for mad cow disease "in a private marketing program can not be granted at this time."

"The use of the test as proposed by Creekstone would have implied a consumer safety aspect that is not scientifically warranted," Hawks said in a statement.

The privately owned company wanted to test all of its cattle to resume trade with Japan, which shut its borders to U.S. beef after the discovery of the first and only U.S. case of mad cow disease in December.

i think a headline should accurately reflect the
contents of the article. many people read only
the headlines in their daily newspapers.

here's one i haven't seen yet but i'm expecting
it any day now... as soon as the editors start
writing headlines that accurately reflect the
contents of the article:

HOLY SHIITES, BATMAN!
