<Give those pesky Shias a 24-hour ultimatum to stop rebelling, or else Saddam's boot will be back on their necks!>

The USA has most of the deck of cards in captivity. It would certainly give pause to certain parties in Iraq if the USA offered Saddam and the rest their old jobs back since the WMDs have been cleared and Iraq is obviously no threat to the USA.

As you say, give the Shites 24 hours to quit the attacks and release the Japanese and other hostages, or Saddam gets his old job back with USA backing. Assuming it's the Shites who are holding the Japanese hostages.

Saddam was a good mate of the USA for decades. If democracy and freedom can't be introduced, they might as well have somebody who knows how to keep insurrection at bay.
