Notice the "if" at the beginning of my sentence.

I would not be a home-buyer myself at these prices, and get myself locked into such a huge mortgage. But if the United States government continues its course of total financial irresponsibility, anyone who has got hold of a house will come out ahead of those who did not.

So what would I do? I think I would rent an apartment and put all my savings into a commodity fund like PCRDX, and wait for better prices. I might be making a mistake, but not as big a mistake as if I found myself with a $400,000 mortgage on a house that would sell for $250,000.
