Whom you've never heard about, but he is about the biggest boxing fan I have ever seen. He's a boxer himself, but he doesn't call himself a boxer. He says he's a fighter. And he's pretty good at it from what I hear from the guys he works out with. Anyway, Raoul is giving me lessons in how to understand boxing. There's a lot to it that I was missing. <G> Like everything. He's very versed in different styles, knows a lot about all the good pros these days, and I just sit back and ask questions and he answers them. It's great! The most interesting thing to me was how he can tell in Round 2 what is going to happen in Round 7. He not only can tell who is going to win the fight, but how they are going to win it, and how they are setting the other guy up to win, and usually within one round of when it actually happens. The best fights (he says, for him) are the ones where both fighters are evenly matched in skill and are doing things that are unexpected. Which sounded simple until he started explaining it to me. It's absolutely uncanny what he sees while a fight is going on. He can point things out and I STILL don't see it until I watch for another few minutes. George Foreman is no longer announcing, but almost every time George said something, Raoul would exclaim "He's right!", many times as if George had said something that was really astute. So I started paying more attention to George. (I started ignoring Lampley at least 15 years ago when he was a regular news personality on one of the stations in LA, I forget which one.) He (Raoul, not Jim) constantly swears at Larry Merchant. It's pretty funny, actually. It didn't take too long for me to figure out that Larry is a bit past the point where he should have stopped making asinine statements about things he is guessing about and then asking moronic condescending questions to professional athletes while looking the other way. The point of this post is to let you know that I am now a much bigger boxing fan than I used to be, because I understand more about it. Not only do I know exactly where you have to hit a guy to knock him out, but I can now see (in replay because the actual action is still too fast for my eyes) how you set him up to knock him out. Good to know from a fan viewpoint, makes it much more entertaining for me.
