Port ripe for terror: pol

Sen. Chuck Schumer blasted the Homeland Security Department yesterday for dropping a plan to fingerprint cruise ship passengers at New York City ports.
The security is especially vital Aug. 29-Sept. 4, during the Republican National Convention, which will bring 50,000 additional visitors to the city, said Schumer (D-N.Y.).

The U.S. Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology program requires that all foreign visa holders be digitally fingerprinted and photographed at 14 major U.S. seaports - except New York - and 115 airports, including Kennedy and Newark.

"If terrorists know they can walk down the gangplank here and not be checked at all, guess what? Instead of taking planes, they'll take ships," Schumer said at the Passenger Ship Terminal on the West Side.

In January, officials said the system would "eventually" be installed at New York's port, Schumer said.

But last week, the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection reneged on the plan, Schumer said.

Schumer's request will be given "due consideration," said Jim Michie, customs spokesman. He added that the agency is "maintaining an appropriate level of security ... while at the same time facilitating movement of people and commerce into and through our ports and borders."
