There are always backdoors. In linux case you have no idea what kind of spy, monster or unix-lover has the key.

But in Microsoft's case, you know that the back door is held by a greedy monopolistic paranoid corporation.

On the other hand Microsoft may wish to take over Italy someday, but other than that it is not in their interests to use the backdoors in any significant way.

A terrorist does not care about software sales. So in a sense, MS's interests are collateral with business and commerce.
