Mr. Bush consistently sends signals to his right wing religious base

On the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the president ended his address to the nation and the world with:

“Tomorrow is September the 12th. A milestone is passed, and a mission goes on. Be confident. Our country is strong. And our cause is even larger than our country. Ours is the cause of human dignity; freedom guided by conscience and guarded by peace. This ideal of America is the hope of all mankind. That hope drew millions to this harbor. That hope still lights our way. And the light shines in the darkness. And the darkness will not overcome it. May God bless America.“ whitehouse.gov

What I recognized immediately as I watched the speech is the reference within that very powerful last paragraph. I gasped. The words that precede “May God Bless America” are an (almost) direct quote from John the evangelist. John uses the words to end his introductory chapter as a vision of the ultimate victory of Christ. The scripture is well known within devout Christian circles. Whether intentional or not, I knew that GWB's quote would serve as an encoded message to the right wing evangelicals (they are at least 40% of GWB’s supporters) who believe that the US should act as God's instrument to convert others to Christianity. I also knew that to the nation of Islam, his words would be understood more like “We Christians are coming to get you”.

I find it chilling that our president chose to end our year of mourning with a call to begin another crusade. And I know that for many of his followers this speech was accepted as just another icon that points the way to the rapture.

Honestly, I think what has happened to the American Public is the rise of money as the measure of everything. Money has become the ultimate good. It used to be that, "the love of money us the root of all evil," but now it's the lack of money that is the root of all evil.

We took a wrong turn in the 1980s and are still headed off this particular cliff.
