You cannot deal straight-up with these people as Bush is attempting to do. They are intentionally framing that memo using hindsight, knowing that to a man, every single leftist American, and some plenty in the middle, will be too dumb to see the truth. It is just impossible to reasonably expect that in a pre-911 world this little memo, using data that was years old and widely known, would cause anyone to begin a new surge of anti-terrorist action against Al Qaeda.

But this commission is strictly political. The Democrats are exploiting it masterfully and the Republicans on it are fairly worthless. Moreover, the press is constantly spinning the entire investigation leftward, as I knew it would. Bush has got to put a firm, but graceful end to this. It has completely obliterated his message and allowed Kerry to go on the offensive, being virtually untouched.
