There was a substantial refi boomlet from mid-Jan through the end of March. There is a strong correlation between refi activity and retail sales.

Robert you posted the Economist article explaining the various "adjustments" in the US statistics - re- retail sales the " Data adjusted for seasonal variatons, holiday, and trading-day differences, but not for price changes." - a whole mix of inaccuracy and room for data manipulation
