I think the focus should be not so much on the AWOL part as on how he was able to dodge the draft in the first place...

Dave-It is trivial whether bush refused to serve during the height or tail-end of the war. The fact is that many people avoided active duty and Nam by joining the Guard, and the fact is that he refused to volunteer for foreign service. He admitted as much--only because the form he filled out was public evidence.

I don't mind this if he didn't want others killed.

The paradox, to me, is that his father was truly heroic--the youngest pilot in WW 2. I have great admiration for Bush Sr. However, riding on coattails does not a leader make.
