I think you're right about Hillary and timing is a big factor here. On average the White House cycles between parties about every 8 years. If Kerry were to win and manage to put in 8 years it would be time for the Republican cycle and Hillary would be hard pressed to win. 2008 is probably her only chance at the Oval Office and she knows it.
