I love it when folks abuse Roosevelt's quote. It's absurd
to think that Teddy meant that when our troops were in
harms way, blatant partisanship, outrageous lies & deceit,
aiding & abetting the enemy were on his mind when he spoke
those words........

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the
president or that we are to stand by the president, right
or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is
morally treasonable to the American public."

Interesting, you go right back to the "criticism/dissent is not traitorous" defense and then try to manipulate Bill (once again).

Bill works very hard to make certain we don't call criticism traitorous. You need to talk with Bill about this series of posts.

My entire point was that Byrd/Kennedy's Vietnam comments were irresponsible enough not to merit the criticism/dissent defense.

Of course, I have never even suggested that this should be illegal - just that they need to be called on it.

Do I think it is a betrayal? Of the First Amendment, no. Of the spirit of the First Amendment, sure. Of the soldiers fighting and dying in Iraq, definitely.

Too bad your "folk" lack the intellectual courage to call the Kennedy/Byrd statements "bad form".

Teddy Roosevelt, of all people, was a man who could discern the difference between criticism and defeatism.

Bill works very hard to make certain we don't call criticism traitorous

No, criticism per se is not traitorous - but I do not give the blanket blessing which you imply, that there is simply no such thing as traitorous criticism.

Criticism which is done knowing it gives aid and comfort to the enemy, especially if it is done for that purpose, in the hopes that it will help American forces to be defeated, can arguably be called traiterous.

The San Francisco demonstrator whose sign read "Support the Insurgents of Fallujah" was no patriot, imo.
