Mike,
I see today as simply a "sell on news" day. This can be the most confusing "game" that is played on the street. The retail investor almost always seems confused whenever there is good news and a sell off at the same time. The market, for the most part, wants to make the most people "wrong" at any given point in time.

You are trying to "rationalize" an irrational event. Trying to label or explain any one day's market action can be very difficult to impossible.

Not that my trading has any influence on the market, but I was a net seller today, until the very end of the day when an opportunity I thought was too good to pass up arrived.

Lately, the market has been going through some very extreme daily moves and today was just another short term swing. Like RtS has pointed out, we were short term overbought TA wise. Add in the early morning bullish pop and there were a lot of reasons to take profits or sell positions. Add in extremely high energy prices, a pinch of inflation concerns and a dash of political uncertainty.

You stated it fairly well: who the hell knows.
