Have you checked to see if the CD-R,DVD-R writer manufacturer has any software updates?.

Wish I could help more with these cd drive issues but I've never had a problem (knock on wood). Here's a google for a lot of issues.

When trying to write data to CD-R, using the Windows program, the program starts, and then suffers a massive shut down

It's a long shot, but if you have the OS on a small partition it could be a disk space issue. If that's the case you can direct windows where to store the temp files for cd burning.
