In this case, the trolls who responded to you are closer to the truth of the matter, IMO. While I find your American history synopsis to be an accurate depiction of the founders intent, I'm afraid that the days of limited government and respect for civil liberties are long gone. No one who has longed lived in America would ever expect the police to show up at their house one day to search it, just to "make sure" there was no contraband. That's exactly what happened here...and the are plenty of other examples...and nobody seems to care... thesmokinggun.com

When I say that CIA should put agents into MSFT, it's not for domestic espionage, it's for being able to plant special software in Saddam Husseins office etc. I don't know what kind of domestic espionage in Europe that you are talking about, but let's take my country as an example. We have two intelligence agencies - one for the defence, who may not do domestic espionage, and one that is part of the police. The police intelligence agency: - May not use civilian agents (like telling an informer that he should do something that isn't 100% legal) - May only wiretap etc. if a judge has ordered so etc. As far as I see it, our police intelligence agency has less possibilities than the FBI. In Germany, they may not even bug private homes, unless there's life in immediate Danger. This means that they cannot bug the home of a known drug dealer, even if they can prove he is a drug dealer and that bugging it would provide useful evidence. This is ensured by an unchangeable part of the constitution, and is also the reason why they have problems nailing terrorists. But anyway - do you think, that Iraq had a few modified Windows deployments before the war in order to deliver useful information to the outside? I do. Dybdahl.
