I thought the presidents opening speech to be excellent but the answers to the reporters questions, almost frightening. He looked like a puppet, pulling talking points out of the air with his puppetmasters Rove, Card and Rice sitting in the first row sending him psychic signals. So in my mind, we have two presidents--the poised scripted speech giver and the discordant, confused question answerer. This would be ok with me and in fact was when i believed in the the competence of the puppet masters. But after watching the 9/11 commission and the deterioration of the situation in iraq, i have to begin to question the competence of the aforementioned puppet masters as well as the others--rummy, cheney and ashcroft in particular. After reading Safire this morning about the proposed Kerry cabinet, i have to seriously reconsider his candicacy once again. Once again the WOT is the most important issue and there is no reason to automatically believe that a liberal cant run a war as well as these guys. By the way, we are running out of time to make iraq a success for american policy. We must turn to a Sistani led solution of an islamic federal, multi religous, multi ethnic democracy. Iraq cant be iran because of its diversity. Sistani is needed to neutralize the iranian and al sadr shiaa and also to assuage the fears of the sunnis. This is no sure fire solution but its pretty much all we have left. The American model for iraq showed hubris on our part. We need to settle for less as we do in Jordan and Egypt where there is relatively some freedom without real democracy. Thats good enough for now imo. Mike
