Re dumb questions: I listened to a segment on NPR yesterday where the asked "regular Americans" what they would like to ask the President at the press conference. All the questions were paraphrases of "Mr. President, how could you be so stupid? " In other words, nobody had a question.

I wonder if press conferences were ever a means to actually extract information from the executive. Was there ever a time when they weren't debates?
