And frankly a little disillusioned with all the vicious hostility on SI. Oh, we're just having a lovefest with some of our favorite people on SI. It was long ago proven they were ineducable.

He tells of how, some years ago, most people who heard about their efforts to "create some air defense system in case terrorists tried to fly aircraft into the Capitol, the White House, or the Pentagon simply thought we were nuts." :-) Even today, there are some people that would say they're nuts. That defense is problematic. At what point in time would you shoot down the aircraft? How certain do you have to be that is the intent. How do you plan on explaining all that fuel and airliner parts that are falling down around the city because you've shot down an airliner and thought that it was going into the White House....you thought so, you were pretty sure. It's not going to be the simple decision of saving the White House on a probability. It includes the certainty that there will be other damage with the decision to down the aircraft. Tough call. I wouldn't envy the person that had to make that decision. We could probably construct a circumstance when it is clear, but I would assume that a real life instance would not be so clear. jttmab

Busy. And frankly a little disillusioned with all the vicious hostility on SI. Vicious hostility on SI!!! I've looked around the net for other discussion servers [English speaking] that might be better and they're pretty much the same. Ignoring those that are dedicated to hostility, one of the challenges of text discussions is that we write as we speak [if you're lucky] but that elimates all the tone and body language that we don't realize is important to communicating. For example, it's very difficult to use sarcasm on a message board. You can use it, but 9 times out of ten you'll be misinterpreted. jttmab
