"why were the iraqi kids hanging around the Americans"

Food and anything else they can get their hands on. They'll steal anything that isn't firmly attached to a soldier. They also lay near the US vehicles at night for extra warmth and protection while they sleep. SOme have become friendly with the soldiers but we learned from Vietnam that it's a dangerous situation. Many kids in Vietnam became friendly with the soldiers only to walk up with a grenade or bomb in their hand later on. These kids are so desperate them will take the best offer on the table at any given time..........they don't care what side makes the offer and they have no allegiance.

There are probably some kids that re basically good but we are the occupiers and we killed their families. It's only a matter of time before they are convinced to join the insurgency.
