Sorry to hear that, Mish. I don't know much about the US system, but it seems hardly fair to immediately drop all medical insurance for a person the minute his/her employment ends.

I hope it all works out. In which sector was your wife working?

Mish.

<We have no medical insurance now, stopped it cold when they let her go yesterday.>

Check with someone familiar with the workings of this - I believe the are laws protecting her from that. Cobra benefits at the least.

Regards & good luck,
ldo79

She and you are entitled to COBRA for 6 months I think - from what I recall the company must pay.

Sorry for her loosing her job it is a difficult job market out there

<<We have no medical insurance now, stopped it cold when they let her go yesterday. Of course this market action has not exactly been going in my favor lately either.>>

With most employers, you can extend this up to 18 months (but will pay higher premiums) through COBRA. I'd make sure she discusses this with the HR department at her employer. Usually you have up to 60 days after termination to sign up for it The premiums are higher because the employer no longer contributes, but at least you have coverage that is usually superior to what you can get individually (although if you both are in perfect health, you may wanna get some quotes).

COBRA should give you/wife an alternative, but more costly,to continue the health insurance plan. 20 or more employees, private sector employers must comply w/ COBRA

Unless wife was a subcontractor, and not covered by employer; even here subcontracting employer should have COBRA options available for you, by law.

Good luck with this, and thanks for this great board, Mish.

Sorry to hear about your wife losing her job..

But we've all been through these things (myself more than once due to restructurings and lay-offs)..

Believe it or not, I just quit a decent job in order to take a far more lucrative job in the "sandbox".. Likely going to be dangerous, but the future opportunities could likely be tremendous with this kind of experience.

So I understand the frustration that can be immediately apparent. But with some patience, perseverence, and a bit of luck, she just might discover this was what she needed in order to find a better opportunity..

As a wise sage once told me, the first day of your job should be the first you're looking for your next...

Btw, there have been some excellent responses posted related to your COBRA benefits. The company has to permit her to purchase her health benefits at a comparable rate to what they paid. I believe 6 months is the general benefit allowance.

Good luck and god bless!!
