Everywhere, the China effect

CHINA’s development has ceased to be merely a fascinating phenomenon. It has already become a significant force in the world economy. Measured output may only be about the same as in Italy, which has one twentieth of the population. Just imagine what a force Italy would be in the eurozone and the world, however, if its national income were growing at nearly 10 per cent a year and if its imports and exports were expanding at a fairly steady annual rate of 35 per cent.
The British and French economies, which fight it out for fourth and fifth spot in the world table, are in the same league as Italy. If China’s exports keep galloping ahead and the UK’s maintain their recent snail’s pace, China will have a larger share of world trade this year and its output will overtake France and then Britain either next year or in 2006. At that stage, it may still be growing fast.



India’s economy is expanding nearly as rapidly but is more self-sufficient and less outward looking. India has therefore yet to make a big impact on world markets.
