The problem isn't whether or not Nixon contested, it is the potential problem of close elections and the EC.

Kennedy only won by a bit more than 100,000 votes. Chicago alone could have tipped the scales drastically to Nixon. Just because the contests were readily resolved in 1960 does not mean that all cases will be in the future. Since the EC overwhelmingly matches the popular vote (even magnifies it, like the Wilson election), it is the worst case scenario that you must consider when weighing its worth.
