Speaking of chicken soup - real chicken soup, not ersatz philosophizing - I can't remember what expression you used to describe cultures which try to exclude influences from other cultures. You used it with respect to Arabic and Japanese cultures a few weeks ago, and I liked it, but now have forgotten it.

I was thinking about chicken soup this afternoon as I drifted off into a nap. Did you know that chickens are not indigenous to the Americas, but were brought here by the Spanish conquistadors? And were so well-liked that they disseminated all over the Americas before the human Europeans arrived. So the Spanish, etc., assumed that chickens were natives. (Which may inform us about the universality of chicken-thieving as a human occupation.)

You can now find chickens just about anyplace on earth, except maybe Antarctica and Siberia and so forth.

There are entire cookbooks devoted to chicken soups, in fact, with recipes from all over the world. Greek chicken soup with eggs and lemons (avgolemono). Thai chicken soup with coconut and galangal. Mexican chicken soup with lime and tortillas. Louisiana chicken gumbo. French poulet a pot. Not to mention the "gold standard", aka "Jewish penicillin." And my own favorite, Chinese egg drop soup, which I call "Chinese penicillin."

But ask yourself - is there a famous Japanese chicken soup? Or a famous Arabic chicken soup?

See where I am going with this?
