I started this with the assumption that there is no incentive to get rid of the EC.

The best reason for getting rid of it, IMO, is that, the way it's set up, it discourages engagement with the election of the President. Unless you live in the handful of states that are up in the air, there's no reason to bother to vote for a Presidential candidate, no reason to study the issues. And if there's no point in casting your vote for the President, maybe you won't bother with voting at all.

But I'm still trying to figure out is why there is someone whose vote counts a little more than mine.

It's not about fairness to individuals, IMO, but rather about vigorous civic engagement. Public apathy and estrangement are not healthy for democracy.
