Re: Attributing culpability to the party that 99.995 of others do is more functional than attributing it to a party that only .005 of others do.

And also prone to being remarkably stupid, herd-like and obnoxiously stubborn in the face of contrary information.

There is nothing to be gained by accepting the "conventional wisdom" at face value because it has been my experience, and that of many, many intelligent observers that conventional wisdom is almost invariably wrong.

Here's a prima facie case where this is true.

Were we alive in 1604, we would be living in world in which 999.95% of the population knew for a fact that the Earth was the center of the Universe. Only crackpots, such a Galileo Galilei said that the Sun was the center of the Universe. He was in a tiny minority. In fact, he was prosecuted by the Church for telling the Truth! Eventually the world came to accept his views, though they are hardly accurate in view of what we now know about astronomy, with the Sun being a minor star at the edge of one of billions of galaxies.

So, for you to tell me that 999.95% of the population has things right only makes me laugh at your naivete.
