Fed's Bernanke not ruffled by recent inflation report By Rachel Koning
CHICAGO (CBS.MW) -- Inflation will remain under control, perhaps over the next couple of years, Federal Reserve Gov. Ben Bernanke said after a speech in Chicago. Asked about the recent uptick in core consumer price inflation, Bernanke also said the key for monetary policy is the inflation forecast not one month's data and it's too early to say whether there will be a significant move higher in prices a year from now. Bernanke repeated his preference for the Fed to operate monetary policy under an inflation target, which his critics say would limit the Fed's flexibility. He takes comfort in the fact that the current rate is within his proposed band of 1 to 2 percent. Bernanke said the Fed aims to communicate its policy view to the market and makes adjustments when necessary, like, for example, last year when it stressed interest rate patience after the bond market began to price in steep rate increases by fall.
