Let's just say that Bush got Arafat's message. You can call this the return message.

Curious that it's being reported as a "180". On the one hand, it represents no change in American policy - which has long been for an eventual Palestinian state, with border adjustments. It never was American policy that Israel should return to June 4, 1967 borders. The difference is, and it's significant, that until now the US took no stance on borders or refugees except to say that the two parties had to negotiate them. Now Bush has blessed Sharon's unilateral steps toward the same end, and officially come out against Palestinian "right of return".

If its jewish votes he is after, its the younger jewish retirees in Florida that may deliver him that state. It is unlikely he can win NY, CA, NJ, CT or any other states with large jewish votes.

I am naive enough to believe that he is doing it because he thinks it is the right thing to do.
