Italian Government Invites Drexler Technology Corporation to Participate at International Conference
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- April 15, 2004 --
The Italian Ministry of Interior has invited Richard M. Haddock, Co-CEO of Drexler Technology Corporation (NasdaqNM:DRXR), to address an international gathering on April 16 in Rome, Italy, devoted to the Italian national ID card program, called the Carta d'Identita Elettronica (CIE).
The conference, entitled "The Italian Identity Card Experience -- European Interoperability for Travel Identification and Citizen Authentication in Service Delivery," will look at some of the issues involved in ensuring EU interoperability of national ID cards, which inevitably will be used for travel purposes with increasing frequency.
Mr. Haddock will discuss how optical memory products can satisfy requirements for interoperability of travel documents, and the current implementations of optical memory products around the world. The presentation will also feature a video of the LaserCard(R) Biometric Verification System (1,000 of which have been purchased by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security). These systems are designed for authenticating and reading LaserCard(R) optical memory cards issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, and Italy.
LaserCard(R) optical memory product implementations have already overcome many of the challenges foreseen for interoperability of travel documents. Not least of these is the need for high data-storage capacity for the storage of full facial, fingerprint and, possibly, iris images. Further, optical memory is not erasable, whereas other memory forms are inherently erasable and vulnerable to the danger of data corruption or substitution; and optical memory is probably the most durably portable data storage technology available today, providing long life and reliable operation.
Headquartered in Mountain View, California, Drexler Technology Corporation (www.drexlertechnology.com) manufactures LaserCard(R) optical memory cards, chip-ready Smart/Optical(TM) cards, and other advanced-technology cards. Its wholly owned subsidiary, LaserCard Systems Corporation (www.lasercard.com) manufactures optical card read/write drives; develops optical card system software; and markets optical cards, card-related data systems, and peripherals.
