Shiite spiritual leader warns coalition to keep out of Iraq holy cities

KARBALA, Iraq (AFP) - Iraq (news - web sites)'s twin Shiite Muslim holy cities are "red lines" that the US-led coalition must not cross in its confrontation with firebrand cleric Moqtada Sadr, a representative of revered spiritual leader Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani said.

"Up to now the marjaiya (the four top clerics, who include Sistani) were able to prevent occupation forces from violating the two holy cities," said Abdul Mehdi al-Karbalai in his weekly prayer sermon at the Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala.

"But if they pursue this option, then this will have very grave consequences because these two cities are red lines that can't be crossed."
