...and the condition of the road - implicite anyhow in your thinking.

Remember driving to JFK with a cab, with the driver taking detours because the highways were plugged. When we finally emerged onto the main artery again, we went through some(pretty hefty) jolts. My comment "Speed bumps?" made the day for the driver - he laughed all the way to departures.

It was potholes.
