Consider your source, James Akins, a career ME diplomat. When he says our failed policy in the area, he ought to know. What was that policy? Perhaps the most succinct statement of that policy is:

"No matter how despotic, how ruthless or how anti-Western Arab strongmen may be, there are 'opportunities' for making common cause with them that will advance U.S. interests in the region."

In any event, Glaspie seems to have had a very minor career since her famous meeting.

Somehow I've missed this thread in my SI travels. I see it has a nice mix of paranoia and bigotry.

Just read a couple of posts from someone who is upset with Sharon for not just sitting idly by while Arafat derails every peace proposal and refuses to allow HIS OWN Prime Minister to even discuss peace.

The same fruit apparently thinks that Bush knew about 9/11. He should join the Duranged thread, which has come up with such great theories as Mossad midgets with tiny nukes imploded WTC, hologram effects staged by S. Spielberg productions.
