Doug,

You have some valid pts. I won't disagree that 9/11 was in planning long before Bush took office. He didn't personally incite it in anyway ...

And yes, there are elements there that are hostile to the US if we have "anything" to do with the region.

I don't deny either of those assertions -- but that doesn't take away the ineptness of this administration and the pointlessness of the invasion of Iraq either. Also, it doesn't mean that a larger segment of the arab population hasn't been radicalized as a result of GWB's takeover of Iraq or his one-way pro-Zionist policies

But regarding 9/11 -- 3 planes made it to their targets -- who was fired in the government?? why did the airlines get rewarded for their incompetence??

Plus there is the ethics of strike first without knowing whether there was an imminent threat -- story was first: we KNOW there is an imminent threat -- they didn't know -- the idea that even WMD's legitimized the takeover in the first place is dubious, IMO -- but these guys didn't know anything. It appears that Iraq was a target looking for an excuse -- now we have the after-the-fact rationalization of democratization. There won't be any democracy there -- this has cost 600 GI's their lives and maybe what -- 9000 Iraqi's.

9/11 has justified and unprecendented boom in government spending, not to mention abuses of due process, etc.

No -- 9/11 is not the fault of GWB -- but his response has been abysmal and an excuse for an awful power grab. Maybe I'm just turning into a liberal crybaby -- but I think the response to 9/11 has done more harm that the actual event.
