Is liberal a bad word. I so then "compassionate conservative" is a bad word too seeing the numbers of jobs lost under Bush, seeing the failure of No Child Left Behind and on and on.

Kerry is a strong common sense centrist progressive. "Progressive" is what old-fashioned liberalism changed into after the Clinton era where
they dropped the welfare mentality and became fiscally
conservative. You could argue that progressive = liberal, but the old definition of "liberal" is outdated.

Similarly, the meaning of "conservative" has changed. These Cheney type neo-conservatives are not honest conservatives and have no interest in conserving anything but their own power and kowtowing to the religious right who make up most of their foot soldiers in the Bible Belt.
They are the most fiscally irresponsible bunch we've ever seen and are also borderline white collar crooks whenever they can get away with it. Tom Delay is the most corrupt congressional leader we have ever had.
