My point is and was, the unions who complain of outsourcing shot themselves in the foot. They were largely responsible for making an inferior, expensive product. To compete, the auto manufacturers went to a different market where they could get higher-quality proudcts (widgets) made for less than American union labor could.

It's a question of economic self-interest. Most individuals want to make a good income. So do most companies. One way for a company to make more (and increase shareholder value) is to reduce the cost of goods. In the auto industry, that in general has meant outsourcing parts manufacture.
