With attacks by insurgents escalating to alarming numbers in Iraq, the U.S.-led coalition needs every available trained soldier to concentrate on the dangerous mission at hand. Contracting with private companies to perform combat support functions frees fighting men and women to focus on the war effort, but military personnel also are learning that privatization can be a double-edged sword.
