Yes - you are completely right - Muslims "revere" Jesus as a prophet
but do not believe He is THE Son of God - the promised seed (singular)

RE>>As far as the story of Ishmael and Isaac goes,
who wrote the Book and who had to gain or lose from the
telling of the story as told?<<

Good question - and something worthy of suspicion but
your presumed bias fails in this case.

Some of the comments I quoted you from scripture were written by the "apostle" Paul.

He was actually speaking AGAINST his own people the Jews.

Paul records this about himself:

Heb 11:1 ¶ I say then, Hath God cast away his people?
God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of
Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

He was as "Jewish" as it gets.

Concerning the Old Covenant and the scriptures that Jews believe to this day:

Philippians 3:5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel,
of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews;
as touching the law, a Pharisee;
6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church;
touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

Paul was at the top of the class - He became a religious leader
and was one of those who stoned Stephen and arrested many Christians
and persecuted them.

He gave all of his religious "position" up when He understood
that Jesus was the "promised seed" the one promised in the garden
to Eve after the fall of man and the forbidden fruit.

Paul has nothing to gain by pointing out that Abraham had 2 sons
one of the maiden and another of his wife except to point out
that God saves through His work and not through the religious
efforts of carnal mankind.

Cain and Abel both appeared before God in worship.
They were twin brothers - no different in race or stature.
They both offered to God sacrifice - but God was pleased only with Abel

Cain killed Abel in jealousy - things never change.

The wicked always persecute the truth and those who are true.

Paul was a Jew - but taught that being Jew meant nothing.

Paul was actually teaching that being a son of Abraham according
to the flesh meant nothing because even the conceited Jew knew
that Ishmael was not accepted.

Abel offered to God what was commanded by God in worship -
while Cain "invented" a sacrifice and religion of his own.

Paul teaches the same thing concerning another famous set of twins.

Romans 9:10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had
conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;
11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having
done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according
to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)
12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

These boys were born twins of the same mother and father
but before they were even born and not according to any sin
that they did or would do God "elected" to love Jacob and hate Esau.

Paul was teaching and proving from God's previous dealings that
belong a "son of Abraham" meant nothing.

Sons of Ishmael and son of Isaac are all on equal ground.

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is
neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female:
for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

The same was taught by John the Baptist - another "son of Abraham"
even of the promised seed in Isaac ( Paul and John were of Isaac not Ishmael )

Matthew 3:7 ¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and
Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation
of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham
to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

John attacked the false confidence that the Israelites of that
day took in being born of Abraham.

The mistake was to think that being a "son of Abraham" saved anyone.

It is the grace of God that saves...

The promise was not to Abrahams offsping as in the entire race
but the promised seed (singular) being Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the
promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many;
but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

Jesus was the promised seed:

Gen 3:13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is
this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent
beguiled me, and I did eat.
14 ¶ And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou
hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above
every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go,
and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman,
and between thy seed and her seed;
it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Eve believe that this promise would be fulfilled immediately
so she thought her first born son was THAT SEED....

Eve's first born son was Cain - the first murderer and idolater
the first persecutor and condemned and unsaved soul to enter the world.

Abel - the second born twin brother - found grace and forgiveness.

Abel was saved but the promised seed was He who would save him..

Christ Jesus the Lord.
