At one time when I did a lot of steam work I had a complete set + of Ridgid pipe wrenches. 4foot down to ten inch. The ten inch was really a waste because we always carried channel locks and they were easier to use.

There were several times even in home type work that I would have to put an extra 6 feet of pipe on the handle of a four footer to break the joint loose. If it involved too many leaks or it was a commercial job we used to just cut the mess out with a sawzall cut new pieces and go with weld fittings. Pipe welders were not cheap but the time and aggravation they can save you is well worth it.
