PIANOMATION: Key acquisition for music fans

Published April 17, 2004

There are folks who tear the ivories out of old pianos to install computer-driven keyboards to create computerized player pianos.

Now QRS Music Technologies Inc. offers recordings to replicate the actual keyboarding of greats like George Gershwin on the rebuilt pianos.

These pricey but potent performances can be had on CDs or even be downloaded or streamed from the Internet. The pianos use a standard called Pianomation, and the music and details are at www.netpiano.com.

Don't shoot the piano player until you've checked this out.
