I'd suggest going to your nearest LDS Library. They are usually very small, but have thousands of films, fiche, etc already on file there, as well as volunteers, many of whom are quite knowledgeable. All these libraries provide forms where you can order films as well, and they are sent at a very small price (it was $2 or $3 the last time I did it several years ago.) Also, don't forget books. There are many with great info as to types of sources available. For instance, there is a book titled The Source, which is like a bible for background on different types of records and where they are. Usually your nearest Genealogical Library, or Historical Library has these books, and sometimes you can order them from the County Libraries where you live.
