"GreenFuelCells" Pioneers New Energy Source (DFJ-Jul/Aug '02) Today's portable electronic devices have become lighter, smaller, and more power hungry. Their demand for battery power may be solved by an innovative technology based on fuel cells developed at the Tel Aviv University (TAU). The technology could provide an alternative source of power for devices such as cellular telephones, laptops, and WebPCs - with significantly longer operation times than other batteries and without dependence on chargers. Such an alternative is especially critical as high-speed, third generation (3G) cell phones are introduced into the market. The company aims to develop an advanced power source that will be capable of functioning for up to forty days without the need to be connected to another electricity source. Hanan Terkel, Director of Business Development at Ramot, says, "These energy sources will lessen dependence on electricity, wires, and charger. In developing countries where the electricity supply is less consistent or nonexistent altogether, GreenFuelCells technology will enable a wider use of cell phones and other devices. We estimate that fuel cell-based energy sources will gradually replace the need for rechargeable batteries in the global marketplace." Cell phones based on GreenFuelCells technology will require refueling every twenty-four days for an average user, compared to battery-operated phones that require recharging several hours every two days. The GreenFuelCells user will have thirteen hours of talk time on one fuel capsule, more than four times the three hours a battery can provide, or 640 hours of standby time compared to 109. The technology is also applicable to the electric vehicle market, he says. For more information, contact Louise Shalev, Tel Aviv University.bridgesforpeace.com
