What's particularly pathetic about Iraq is not only did the Bushites get it completely wrong - they also tried to do it all on the cheap. The main reason the US has to be so heavy handed in Iraq is because the force is too small. The one thing the US has though is more firepower so they hammer places like Falujja because they have no alternative. Now Bush see himself in mess where he can't afford to look weak so the military hammers. As you say, the violent oppression of Saddam has been replaced with the violent opression of the US.
