Portugal Eyes Iraq Pullout

Politics: 17 April 2004, Saturday.
Portugal considers the withdrawal of its troops from Iraq should tension in the country continue to escalate.

A pullout is the only solution in case the conflict in Iraq aggravates and the GNR (national guard) did not have what it required to carry out its mission, Portugal's Interior Minister Antonio Figueiredo Lopes said talking to Antena 1 Radio.

In a bid to clarify the statement the minister's spokesman later called a possible Portuguese withdrawal only "an academic hypothesis".
