Fallujah's is no Ho-chi-minh city and Iraq is no Vietnam ..Fallujah's civic leaders joined American officials Monday in calling for insurgents battling Marines here to surrender their weapons in return for an end to the U.S. siege of the the city, according to a U.S. spokesman. The committments appeared to be the first fruits of direct negotiations between U.S. officials and a group of civic leaders and professions representing Fallujah residents. The joint statement also outlines promises to improve the humanitarian situation in the beseiged city and to attempt a restoration of control in the city to Irasqi security forces, U.S. spokesman Dan Senor said. In the statement, all parties "call on citizens and groups to turn in all illegal weapons," Senor said. "The parties agreed that coalition forces do not intend to resume offensive operations if all persons inside the city turn in the heavy weapons," Senor said. "Individual violators will be dealt with on individual basis." The Fallujah representatives are believed to have influence with Sunni insurgents in the city, a hotbed of the anti-U.S. insurgency that has taken a record 99 American lives in combat action this month alone.

How long do you think you'd survive in a firefight with wishful thinking like this? Are you serious??? Do you want me to remind you of this statement, say, at the end of the year when it becomes clear that Jordan has taken no military actions (i.e. "taking on") Syria??? Re: "Syria is either a separate and sovereign country or an Al Qaeda base, its time they made up their mind which they are, I'm sure Jordan will want to know that answer. " Years from now the idiots of the mid 21st century will be blaming the loss of the war in Iraq on the failure of the Bush / Kerry administrations to take the war into Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Hey, go put on your chess player's hat and utilize the simple human skill of "counting". The hell you think we're going to get enough troops to occupy Syria when we don't have nearly enough to occupy Iraq??? Believe it or not, the Syrians play chess too, and they can count, and they know that they are quite immune to any serious invasion by the United States. The best we could do would be the same as we did in Iraq, which is to eliminate the Syrian government and turn the country into a disneyland for terrorists. The thought that Jordan would take them on is a joke. For that matter, all the neocons could talk about last summer was how our actions in Iraq were making the Syrians, Iranians, Saudis and Libyians behave. -- Carl
