You can have a soap-box myopic view of history if you like , yet without too much effort you can see the influences of many of the philosophical schools particularly Stoicism with its belief in universal brotherhood and justice which exerted an important influence on developing Christianity. The truth is Greg , the early Christians were quite intolerant. .... They believed as you do , that their God was the only God and that their Savior was the only savior. "Except through me you shall not see my Father," as they believed Jesus had said. More than that, they also believed that Jesus had commanded them to spread the faith by converting others. As a consequence, Christians were not willing to let others follow their own faiths, but condemned the beliefs of others and tried to convert them to their own belief. Later on into the Dark ages ...the persecution of all who did not believe as they , was all theirs. Jesus , Paul , Mary or John the Baptist ...or no. And yes , it was the blood of the martyrs that originally made up the foundation of the church , and its appeal to the downtrodden and poor , the slaves and reformed Jews living in the early ghettos..and Constantine saw that it would be to the empire's great advantage to harness the zeal and turn it into a tool for preserving the state. You may even witness the sublime countenence of many zealous believers today , on the faces of those who know above all things that their God and religion is the only "truth" , and destined to rule upon and over this earth . This zeal is strangely familiar .
