Clash of civilizations! But remember the Dutch didn't come as philanthropists. Firstly, they cane as entrepreneurs. The Dutch East India Company was, in the 17th Century, the largest company in the world. The early settlers came to open a "half-way-house" between Holland and the wealth of the East. Secondly, in the 18th century, the Huguenots came from France as result of persecution of Protestants by the Catholics. These then formed the basis of early white settlements in what later became SA. The English settlers started coming from 1820 on and others came from all over the world, including from Asia: these increased as the country became more viable.

> It reminds me of the original settlers to America who was fleeing from oppression and eventually conquered the Indian tribes who was also considered savages

Exactly. The early history of SA and US is very similar.

> I always regret that the more educated always see others as savages who must be relegated to an inferior class

Until the "savages" take over control of the government!! Then it's another story.

> sometimes I feel like I am sticking my nose into areas that I am quite ignorant of

Same here, but what the Hell. That's the only way one learns. And the internet is amazing because it provides a never-before-available means to do it.
