Looking at the photo, I couldn't help but remembering the Star Trek joke (punchline: "That's because it's set in the future.")

But then I remembered photos of African women in places like Zimbabwe with their lips, eyelids and noses cut off, which doesn't kill, unfortunately, they can live indefinitely like that. And lest it seem that I am blaming only non-whites, I am thinking of photos of the Belgian Congo under King Leopold.

Pesky things, those photographers.
