Mt. Vernon is a 4 hour drive for me. Last time I was there in 1987. I know it's close to Rend Lake which is a great fishing and water fowling lake. Nice golf course too. The state has built a really up scale resort on the lake. As for those corn cooking steam engines, most towns in Central Illinois have one of those festivals. Well, Tremont has it's Turkey Festival where turkey meat is the draw and Clinton has the Apple and Pork festival, Pork sandwiches and fried apples.
