U.S. chain-store sales up 1% in latest week

WASHINGTON (AFX) -- U.S. retail chain-store sales increased 1 percent in the week ended April 17 compared to the prior week, according to the latest index compiled by the International Council of Shopping Centers and UBS. The year-over-year change amounted to a 5.9 percent growth rate, but this represented a slowdown from gains seen in each of the previous several weeks. The shift in the Easter holiday was reflected in last week's sales results. Mike Niemira, ICSC's chief economist, stood by his forecast calling for the nation's chain-store sales to rise about 5.0 percent for all of April
