I agree with Brumar and it is a expectations game. But on the other hand, if a Iraqi solution is elusive, US soldiers continue to loose their lives (handing over sovereignity or not) and the economy with respect to jobs in particualer does not improve, then Kerry would succeed in making a strong case which would be appealing to the American people. And his case is that we involve the UN, have those countries put in their young men and women in the line of fire, have them dole out the money and help Iraqi rebuilding. Kerry could still go out and appeal to those who support going into Iraq by saying yes we did the right thing in removing Saddam, yes we did the right thing in sowing the seeds od democracy, now let the UN water and nurture the plant of democracy in Iraq.

Politically, IMO, this is what Kerry will go. Force Cheney and his folks to give up there designs on the oilfields of Iraq by turning Iraq over to the UN. Kerry will, IMO, build a strong case for pulling Halliburton out of Iraq without ever having to mention it by name.

..although his speech on 9/14 was one of the greatest in our time) I agree - he does well in prepared speeches.

And his stumbles in off the cuff question answering actually are converted into assets by raising the bar for his opponent and encouraging his opponent to "misunderestimate" him.

People look at these things and ask themselves: Do I believe him? Is he strong enough? Is he resolute? Do I like him? Absolutely. And most people will answer those positively for Bush. Kerry OTOH has a problem in the resoluteness and likeability areas.
